A top police officer has apologised to a mother who wasn't allowed to spend time with her boy after he died in the Hillcrest Primary School jumping castle tragedy.

Tasmania Police assistant commissioner Adrian Bodnar was moved to tears when describing the efforts of first responders who tried to save six children on December 16, 2021.
