Cardiff's highest-rated hotel on TripAdvisor has closed temporarily after a water pipe burst, affecting utilities and stopping the hotel from properly functioning. The Coal Exchange Hotel initially announced the temporary closure over the weekend and this is expected to continue into the week.
In a statement on February 18, the hotel's management announced: "Due to an unforeseen circumstance, an incident at the hotel has taken out utilities that we are not able operate without. Once we know more we’ll update all our guests, but for now the hotel will be temporarily closed. Please note we’ll contact all guests regarding their stay."
A spokesperson has since confirmed that the closure was due to a burst water pipe, adding that staff were unsure when the hotel will be able to re-open as the team are still assessing the damage. Guests are being asked to wait until they are contacted with information about their bookings as the team are experiencing a higher number of calls at the moment.

Management hope the hotel will be open in time to welcome guests to Cardiff for the huge Wales v England match at the Principality Stadium this weekend, although this depends on how quickly the damage can be repaired. Guests with bookings will be updated as soon as possible.
One guest whose booking was cancelled said on Facebook: "We just received our call now confirming cancellation of our booking today. It's disappointing of course but it is what it is.
"I feel so bad for the staff and the hotel. Cancelling, refunding along with sorting alternative accommodation for their guests who are already there will be crippling for them as a business."
The Coal Exchange Hotel is one of Cardiff's most sought-after hotels and has a long history as a music venue. Now a 3* hotel and home to Culley's Kitchen and Bar, it was originally built as the Coal and Shipping Exchange and was a key part of the global coal trade.
