Top 3 bedbug-infested cities: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia; Orkin report

Chicago has the most bedbugs.

As travelers, we often have to grapple with various concerns when planning our trips. From choosing the right accommodation to ensuring smooth transportation, there's a lot to consider. However, one issue that has become increasingly prevalent in recent years is the dreaded bedbug problem. These bloodsucking insects have infested hotels in many cities, causing distress for guests. If you're worried about encountering them during your travels, it may be useful to know which cities have the highest bedbug infestations.

According to pest control company Orkin, Chicago takes the top spot for the most bedbug cases in the United States. This is followed closely by New York and Philadelphia, maintaining their positions from previous years. It's worth noting that this is the fourth consecutive year that Chicago has held this unfavorable distinction. While it may be disheartening to hear, it's essential to stay informed and take precautions to protect yourself.

Another city that has seen a concerning increase in bedbug cases is Cleveland-Akron, which has climbed four positions on the list compared to the previous year. Los Angeles also experienced a significant rise, moving up seven spots to secure the fifth position. Rounding out the top ten are Detroit, Washington, Indianapolis, Charlotte (North Carolina), and Champaign (Illinois).

So, what exactly are bedbugs, and how can you identify them? These resilient creatures are typically around 3/16 inch long, ranging from red to dark brown in color. Bedbugs are mostly active at night and survive by feeding on the blood of sleeping humans. They can hide in various places, such as mattress seams, soft furniture, and even behind headboards. When you check into a hotel, it's crucial to survey your room for signs of an infestation. Look for tiny, ink-colored stains on the mattress seams, behind headboards, and in soft furniture. Don't forget to lift and inspect hiding spots like the mattress, box spring, furniture, baseboards, and even torn wallpaper.

To minimize the risk of bringing bedbugs home with you, it's advisable to elevate your luggage away from the bed and wall. The safest storage locations are in the bathroom and on countertops. Before repacking your belongings or returning home from a trip, thoroughly examine your luggage. Additionally, consider placing all dryer-safe clothing from your luggage in the dryer for at least 30-45 minutes at the highest setting. This will help eliminate any potential bedbugs.

While the presence of bedbugs does not necessarily reflect poorly on a hotel's cleanliness, it's essential for both establishments and guests to take preventive measures. These pests can be transported through personal belongings, so it's crucial to be vigilant. By familiarizing yourself with the signs of infestations and following the recommended procedures, you can minimize the risk of encountering bedbugs during your travels.

It's also worth noting that Orkin's list is based on the company's own bedbug treatments performed between December 2022 and November 2023. It is advisable to consult additional sources or pest control experts to obtain the most up-to-date information on bedbug prevalence in specific cities.

While bedbugs may be an unfortunate reality for travelers, knowledge and awareness are powerful tools to combat them. By staying informed and taking proper precautions, you can help protect yourself from these unwanted pests and enjoy a worry-free trip.
