Toothless dog up for adoption despite loving to bite and regular coughing fits

A decrepit and toothless dog being offered up for adoption has become a viral hit - despite the rescue centre admitting that he 'loves to bite' and has severe coughing fits every time he gets excited.

Chihuahua Lord Herald was initially brought into a shelter to be put down, but shot to internet stardom after One More Dog Rescue in Chicago, Illinois, posted a brutally honest description of him last month.

In it, the centre jokingly hailed Lord Herald 'the most adoptable dog on the planet' before reeling off his adorably troubled bill of health and personality traits.

The post revealed that he loves to bite, but because he has no teeth, it means he gives more of a 'sad gummy kiss'.

The rescue also admitted he has severe coughing fits every time he gets excited.

Despite this, One More Dog said the pooch is 'harmless' and that they refuse to put him down for 'behavioural issues' as they believe his health can be managed with treatment.

Images of Lord Herald, which have since gone viral, show that his tongue appears too big for his head and lolls out of his mouth.

Centre co-founder Kelly Dietrich says the Facebook description, along with a photo of him with his tongue sticking out, led to more than 50 adoption requests in the first five days.

Their post earned almost 10,000 comments and shares with users hailing it 'the best bio ever' and Lord Herald a 'A+ perfect animal'.

Kelly, from Cleveland, Ohio, said: "It was pure sarcasm that he's the most adoptable, but with all the comments he probably is.

"I think everyone loves an honest post and everyone loves a bit of satire. We don't take ourselves too seriously and I think that's a breath of fresh air.

"There's no point in sugar coating things. It doesn't do the dogs any favours. We like our adopters to know everything we can tell them and Lord Herald certainly has a lot to disclose.

"He's got the personality of a very large dog but he's very small so it's even funnier. He's very calm and loves to be in his nest bed. He loves his other foster dogs. He just doesn't like to be handled.

"He's going to be looking for a more quiet home and someone who understands he won't want to be a purse dog. There's somebody out there who he'll be perfect for. We just have to find them.

"We got at least 50 applications within the first week. We get emails and Facebook messages all the time for him."

Lord Herald was brought into a Chicago shelter to be put down but they directed him to One More Dog Rescue as they didn't feel his heart condition was severe enough.

The centre discovered that he 'loves to wear hats' and claimed he's ready to become 'TikTok famous' in the popular post.

Lord Herald won't be available to adopt for around a couple of months until he sees the vets and they're sure he's ready to begin his new life.

His name derives from an inside-joke based on an auto-correct on one of the centre's messages when her phone changed 'lots herself' to 'Lord Herald' - so they decided to call their next dog that.

Kelly says they're now beginning to sift through the applications ready to find the perfect fit for their in-demand pooch.

One Dog Rescue's post said: "We've done it. We have found him. THE most adoptable dog on the planet.

"There is not a soul on earth who will not want to apply for him. We have won the game of rescue.

"Meet Lord Herald. He is about 10 years old. He has a severe heart murmur. He has a persistent cough we've been treating with medication.

"Oh and he's a big biter. Loves to bite. Don't worry though the guy has zero teeth so instead it's just like a sad gummy kiss.

"Also the excitement from latching on brings on a coughing fit. Yes, you can laugh. No, we're not going to euthanize him because of behaviour.

"He is decrepit and harmless. We feel confident he can bring someone to peak TikTok fame."

One commented: "A+ perfect animal. Would adopt if my dog wouldn't eat him. Go Lord Herald! Go forth and find your forever home you grumpy little angel!"

Another said: "I effing love Lord Herald. I wish I could adopt him, I would in a heartbeat! I hope he finds an amazing home."

A third said: "This is the best profile and bio ever! Bring me Lord Harold cause I love to bite too and too much excitement sends me into fits as well! We were meant to be together!"

One simply added: "I love this. The write up. The dog. It's amazing lol."

If Lord Herald isn't fit to be adopted, he will live the rest of his at One Dog Rescue.
