Tony Docherty admits massive Dundee disappointment after Motherwell draw

Tony Docherty admits he felt massively disappointed after seeing his Dundee side concede a late goal to draw 3-3 with Motherwell.

The Dark Blues looked set to land a vital away win when Zach Robinson scored with two minutes left only for Conor Wilkinson to reply in time added-on to earn the home side a point.

Docherty praised his players for their display throughout the 90 minutes but admitted the late equaliser had taken a shine off things.

The Dundee manager said: “Huge disappointment because that was an absolutely dominant performance.

“We had a similar game against St Johnstone when we were so dominant away from home and dropped two points. We’ve done that massively again. But I can’t be too harsh on the players.

“Our performance was outstanding, we were by miles the better team in terms of shots, possession.

“We just have to manage the last 90 seconds. I said to the boys if I set up that situation in training 100 times then we defend it 100 times.

“We gave up possession then didn’t defend a goal kick. We didn’t win the first header or pick up the second ball. They got a runner through and scored.”

“I think we are playing like a top six team. I don’t think we should’ve drawn this game."

Stuart Kettlewell harboured mixed emotions despite seeing his team grab an injury-time equaliser to take a point against Dundee.

Motherwell were second best for long spells but salvaged something from the contest when Conor Wilkinson struck late on.

And Kettlewell said: “It’s a great finish from Conor but you’ll forgive me for thinking it’s a wee bit bittersweet.

“It’s not good enough. I thought we started on the front foot but that seemed to be the catalyst to take a backwards step which frustrates me beyond belief.

“We’ve been talking about trying to get the first goal and we should grow in belief. But it seemed to have the opposite effect.

“We shot ourselves in the foot far too often and allowed Dundee to come on to us at home. In the second half, we didn’t get much of a rhythm.”

On Harry Paton’s sending off, Kettlewell added: “I caught a glimpse of it on the screen and I believe it’s a red card. But Greg Taylor’s tackle last week on Blair Spittal was no different and he received a yellow card while Harry Paton gets a red card. These types of tackles must come with the same punishment but they certainly don’t.”
