Tommy Tiernan opens up on 'different' side of Roy Keane off-screen as he defends interview

Tommy Tiernan has revealed that Roy Keane was "different" when they spoke backstage following his interview with the football legend.

The former Republic of Ireland captain and assistant coach was the first guest on the Tommy Tiernan Show as it returned for a new season last weekend.

Keane discussed a number of topics with the comedian, including his first date with his wife, family life and his mentality as a player.

And speaking to co-hosts Hector Ó hEochagáin and Laurita Blewitt on the Tommy & Hector Podcast with Laurita Blewitt this week about his interview with Keane, Tiernan said: "We chatted for a good ten minutes after the interview, and it was different.

"He was very friendly. He's a lovely man. He's also funny.

Some people were critical of the interview for various reasons, but Tiernan brushed such criticism aside.

He added: "The interview had its own particular dynamic, but it was still very interesting to talk to him, it was still fun.”

Some people believe the show works better without an audience, who returned to the studio for the first time since the Covid pandemic last weekend, and Tiernan believes there is an argument to be made for no audience.

He said: "When the audience is there... when it gets serious, the energy of the audience, it's like a pile-on, they add extra intensity.

"I think there's an argument to be made for no audience."
