Tommy Fury WBC ranking decision made after Jake Paul fight statement

Tommy Fury has been confirmed to also be fighting for a cruiserweight world ranking with the WBC should he beat Jake Paul in their fight this weekend.

The Love Island star has won his first eight fights and has been given the opportunity after it was confirmed last week that Paul would receive a top 40 ranking with a win. Paul was initially given the opportunity when he was due to fight Hasmim Rahman Jr on August 6 last year, but that fight was cancelled after Fury had previously withdrawn from the same date.

Last week's statement failed to clear up whether or not Fury would be ranked if he beat Paul, with the British fighter not currently having a ranking having spent the majority of his career as a light-heavyweight. However, the WBC president has now confirmed that the 8-0 Manchester boxer will be given the same standing as Paul when the fight is settled.

Mauricio Sulaiman is head of the Mexico City based governing body and has repeatedly revealed his admiration for Paul, saying said that if the 6-0 Paul can beat the undefeated Fury then a place in the cruiserweight rankings will be earned.

Sulaiman told The Sun that a ranking will be awarded to either fighter should they secure victory, but that a place in the prestigious top 15 down to the committee's decision, he explained: "(We) cannot anticipate which number.

"The WBC ranks 40 fighters in each weight category, the performance in such fight, by both fighters, will determine the evaluation of the ratings committee." Either fighter would be eligible for a world title fight should they enter the top 15 of the rankings, with Sunday's undercard featuring the WBC world title fight in the same division between Ilunga Makabu and Badou Jack.

He added: "I had provided my opinion before Jake Paul's last fight and the WBC ratings committee did not rate him after his win versus Silva. Now that he will fight Tommy Fury, who is an established boxer, it becomes possible to rate him."
