Tommy DeVito will serve as Giants’ No. 2 QB in Week 9

New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito, who the team did not trust to throw a pass during the second half of regulation in last Sunday’s 13-10 overtime loss to the New York Jets, has been officially named the primary backup to Daniel Jones.

Jones missed three games with a neck injury and is returning this week.

DeVito will be on the sidelines as the No. 2 quarterback this Sunday afternoon when the Giants face the Raiders in Las Vegas as Tyrod Taylor (ribs) has been ruled out.

Matt Barkley, who was signed to the practice squad this week, will potentially serve as the emergency quarterback.

“Right now, yes, he’s the number two,” offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said on Thursday when asked about DeVito. “I think he’s had a great spring, great camp, has had a great start to the season right now working on the scout team. He does everything in the meeting rooms, he’s a great dude, great teammate, so yeah, ton of confidence in Tommy.”

Taylor was injured midway through the second quarter last Sunday and DeVito was inserted into the game. He went 0-3 in the second quarter and then did not throw a pass in the second half as the Giants did not allow him to on any of their 22 snaps as they nursed a three-point lead for the next 24 minutes until the Jets tied the game with 0:00 left on the clock.

DeVito did run for a touchdown in the game but finished two of seven passing for a total of minus-1 yard.

“I’d say the way the game kind of declared itself,” Kafka said when asked why the Giants chose to take the air out of the ball in the second half. “You know, it’s kind of the way it went with the run game focus. I think that was a big part of our gameplan.”

Not for nothing but Giant fans hope they don’t have to see DeVito, Taylor or Matt Barkley under center for some time.
