Andy Burnham’s pledge to cut business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues has been criticised as a political stunt, with one pub landlord comparing it to “stealing my lunchbox and giving me a crisp back”.
Mr Burnham announced the 20 per cent reduction in business rates on Thursday – his third major policy announcement in three days – promising around 32,000 businesses would benefit. He said the typical pub would save around £1,100 annually.
