Tom Holland says Spider-Man: Brand New Day is undergoing reshoots to add humor and "[layer] in a villain plotline in a new way"

Just over three months before upcoming Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day is due to swing into cinemas, star Tom Holland has confirmed that the film is undergoing reshoots to add comedic value and some extra scenes involving a villain.

"We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor," said the star in an interview with GQ, confirming that at the time of the interview, he was in London doing said reshoots. "We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff."

Now, it is not clear when exactly the interview took place, but the story was released on April 8, meaning the reshoots could still be taking place. However, Holland promises that it's nothing to worry about. "I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need," he said. "The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas."

Marvel is no stranger to adding extra scenes at the very last minute. Just last year, both Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps underwent reshoots. However, the news has Spidey fans a little worried. "When studios start making big changes at this stage, it usually means something went sideways earlier," said one fan on Twitter, whilst others wondered which of the film's villains is getting more screentime.

However, a lot of fans seem to be worried about the 'humour' comment. In the first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, Marvel fans saw a new side to Holland's Peter Parker, who now has to live without his love interest after wiping MJ's memory at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Fans were excited to see a moodier take on the hero, just like we saw with Tobey Maguire's Spidey in Spider-Man 2.

Nevertheless, the new movie will surely breathe new life into the franchise, adding a string of new faces, including Severance star Tramell Tillman, and Stranger Things' Sadie Sink in a mysterious role. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day catches up with the hero years later, when he has to suit up once again and face new threats alongside Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31. For more on Marvel Phase 6, check out our guide on all of the other upcoming Marvel movies and shows.
