Tom Grennan has opened up about the intensive training he has undertaken to participate in the upcoming Soccer Aid tournament – admitting he is anxious about being out of shape.
The 26-year-old chart topping star has blamed his recent tour of the USA for his unexpected weight gain – and says he fears appearing less than his best on screen.
Tom is among the celebrities that are due to take to the pitch at London Stadium in the Stratford neighbourhood of the capital next month – with Liam Payne, Lucien Laviscount and Usain Bolt also among those playing.
The Little Bit Of Love singer was on the road in the USA last month and says he is still working off an unhealthy diet of burgers and fires.
He explained to The Sun: “Soccer Aid training is going well.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve put a bit of a tour belly on, but I’m out at the moment doing laps of the field and I played football last night, so I’m getting ready for it.
“I was eating rubbish in America. It’s just fries and Impossible Burgers.
“I’ll definitely be in a headspace where I’m there to play well. It’s on TV, for God’s sake. I’m not looking rubbish, no way.”
However, Tom may also be one to watch on the pitch at the event on June 12 as he previously considered becoming a professional footballer.
The Bedfordshire born lad was once on the books of Luton Town, but walked away from his football dreams when he felt he wouldn’t be up to scratch.
He then turned his attention to music – and has thus far released two albums, including the UK chart topping Evering Road last year.
When he performed in New York last month, Tom was the victim of a terrifying attack while outside a bar in the Big Apple.
The vicious attack left him knocked him out, and with a ruptured ear, torn ear drum, concussion and problems to a previously fractured jaw.
Addressing the incident earlier this week, Tom said: “I was in the wrong part of town really, stupidly. I went for a few drinks after a gig to celebrate, and I don’t really know New York, but it turned out to be wrong place at the wrong time.
“I couldn’t let it spoil the experience and it didn’t, I’ll never forget that trip and we went to Australia straight after. It has been the most incredible year or two for me.”
While at the time of the attack, fans took to social media to express their shock.
One wrote online at the time:: “Oh my god, Jesus… I’m in shock. What the hell is going on on this planet? I have no words, get well soon Tom.”
