Tom Daly set to be available for Euro second leg v Leinster after weekend red card

Tom Daly will be back for Connacht's Champions Cup round of 16 second leg against Leinster at the Aviva Stadium after a six-week ban was effectively slashed to two weeks.

Daly was red carded for a high tackle on Leinster's Ciaran Frawley in the second minute of last Saturday's URC encounter at the Sportsground, a game the visitors eventually won 45-8.

The 28-year-old centre, who was selected for Ireland's summer series last summer but wasn't capped, faced a disciplinary hearing today over the incident.

The dismissal was made under Law 9.13 - a player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously.

It was decided by the judicial officer, Declan Goodwin of Wales, that Daly's actions met the threshold of a red card that a six-week suspension was justified.

But Goodwin took into account Daly's clean previous record, his on-field apology to Frawley and his "exemplary" behaviour through the disciplinary process, leading to three weeks being taken off the ban.

That would have ruled him out of Connacht's next three fixtures, the URC clash with Benetton on Saturday followed by the back to back European ties with Leinster on successive Fridays.

However under new World Rugby rules, a player can now choose to participate in a World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme to be coached on his tackle technique.

Daly will be expected to do so and that will allow him to come back in time for the away leg against Leinster on April 15.
