Tom Cruise arrived to direct a Star Wars: Starfighter action scene in typical Tom Cruise fashion: by landing a helicopter in the middle of set

Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray in Star Wars: Starfighter.

Tom Cruise crashed the set of Star Wars: Starfighter to direct one of the movie's action scene, but it turns out he did it in a typically Tom Cruise-esque fashion – by interrupting filming by landing his helicopter in the middle of the set.

What's more, the movie's star Ryan Gosling has revealed that it happened on one of his rare days off. "I wasn't there! It's the one day I'm not there," Gosling told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

"I worked on that movie the whole time. I get one day off, and Shawn [Levy] sends me a picture of him and Tom Cruise and Flynn [Gray]," he continued. "They're, like, in the mud. I was like, 'What?' and they were like, 'Yeah, Tom Cruise flew his helicopter onto set.' They were just shooting, and they heard a helicopter and they had to cut, and it was Tom Cruise. He lands in the middle of set, he takes a camera, and he just starts shooting the action scene. There's a shot of him in the mud shooting Flynn. It was an incredible moment, and I don't know why he waited for the one day I wasn't there. I'm going to hope that was an accident."

The movie's director Shawn Levy revealed that Cruise filmed part of a lightsaber duel earlier this year in an interview with the New York Times, saying, "Last week Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes. Now when you see the movie, you'll know that part of it was shot by Tom. I mean, how cool is that?"

Not much is known about Starfighter just yet, other than the fact that it takes place a few years after The Rise of Skywalker. Gosling and Gray's co-stars include Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams.

Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theaters on May 28, 2027. In the meantime, get up to speed with everything else coming from the galaxy far, far away with our guide to the other new Star Wars movies and shows.
