Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Blaine Gabbert has made a comparison between Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.
Gabbert - expected to be the backup quarterback to Mahomes with the Chiefs for the 2023 regular season - has experience of working alongside each of the QBs, with both regarded as two of the best to have ever graced the NFL.
The 33-year-old had previously spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with three of them as a teammate of Brady’s. - including in 2021 on their way to winning the Super Bowl, ironically against the Chiefs.
Brady announced his retirement from the NFL back in February after winning a total of seven Super Bowls in his career. The 45-year-old’s retirement coincided with Gabbert’s exit from Tampa, where he was picked up by the Chiefs a couple of months later.
April saw Gabbert signed by the Chiefs reigning Super Bowl winners as a free agent on a one-year contract. He will be the main backup to Mahomes as the AFC West franchise looks to win the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season.
Gabbert is currently taking part in the Chiefs’ latest organised team activities (OTA) as the new season draws ever closer. After the latest session, the QB was asked about his time working alongside both Brady and Mahomes.
Speaking to reporters in a press conference, Gabbert explained why he thinks Brady and Mahomes have been able to perform at the highest level in their respective careers, as well as making a claim about why the duo are so alike.
“They’re maniacal perfectionists,” Gabbert told reporters. “And I mean that in the most endearing way possible.
“They’re the two best, in my opinion, ever to play the game. To see the similarities, how they operate in the meeting room, on the practice field. They’re completely different players, as we all know, but the way they approach the game, on and off the football field is the exact same.”
Gabbert went into further detail on Mahomes, who will now be his teammate after being his opponent in the 2021 Super Bowl. The 33-year-old revealed some behind the scenes moments that show why Mahomes is one of, if not the best quarterback in the NFL right now.
“His (Mahomes) attention to detail,” said Gabbert. “He’s a master of the system.
“He approaches the system like day one, still taking notes like he’s a rookie as all quarterbacks do. There’s always something he wants to improve on.”
