Tom Aspinall, one of the leading names in the UFC heavyweight division, has vacated his heavyweight championship after ongoing eye complications prevented him from receiving medical clearance to compete. The British fighter has been sidelined since October and says he has undergone multiple surgeries, dealt with accidents and infections, and done everything possible to return to the Octagon.
Aspinall, 33, last competed in October, when his fight against Ciryl Gane in Abu Dhabi ended in a first-round no-contest following multiple eye pokes. The injury led to a series of medical procedures and kept him out of competition for months.
