A young child has been killed after a cement truck careered off a bridge and crushed the car he was travelling in.
Nicolas Resendiz, a 22-month-old toddler, was killed when the SUV he was in was hit by the truck after it lost control. He was confirmed dead at the scene.
His mother Jennifer described her son as "a happy, smart, and nice little boy".
NBC News reported the other three people in the car, a 22-year-old woman, the driver, 54 and the child's twin sibling all managed to escape.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales said: "Tragic incident. Our units responded to a major crash at the intersection of WoodForest & E Sam Houston [Parkway].
"It appears a cement truck travelling on the main lanes lost control, went over the overpass and landed on top of a vehicle with four occupants."
The incident took place on Friday, August 5 and shocked the family.
Nicolas' aunt Esmerelda Resendiz said: "I guess we’re all just sad that he got taken away so early and that his sister won’t be able to see him no more or have a play buddy."
His uncle Daniel Resendiz added: "You know, it’s been three days...four days since then. It still feels like I’m going to wake up from this bad dream."
The incident reportedly occurred when the truck swerved to avoid a car and was left dangling over the edge of the overpass as it crashed through it.
Cars below attempted to move out of the way but the car Nicolas was in was unable to avoid it.
Police investigators confirmed the driver of the truck decided against hospital treatment and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the truck crashed.
Witness Raymond Romo said: "We saw it, when we were in the middle of the parking lot, land on the vehicle. Instantly, me and my friend Joe, we went into action."
A GoFundMe fundraiser was started by Jennifer who said "any small donation that you find in your heart to give, no matter how small, will be a blessing for the family."
A total of $24,320 has been raised so far, the equivalent of £20,261, surpassing the goal of $15,000. One anonymous donation gave a generous $2,000.
She added: "Friday afternoon, our family was devastated by an unexpected and unimaginable tragedy.
"Baby Nicolas Resendiz lost his life in a horrible, freak accident after a cement truck went over the rail fell on top of the vehicle he was in.
"He was only 22-months-old but he was a happy, smart, and nice little boy.
"Although our family is still in shock, unable to process the loss of this sweet angel, we know that the days to come will be even more challenging as mom has to make arrangements for his funeral."
