Todd Cantwell given brutal Rangers red card review as pundit says 'Tyson Fury wouldn't knock him down as quick'

Decisions taken by Nick Walsh and VAR have brought the opinions of the Sportscene panel to the fore following Rangers' win over Motherwell - and Todd Cantwell is not spared a brutal verdict.

There were two marginal offside calls and a red card to be dissected in the game as Michael Beale's side ran out 4-2 winners. Connor Goldson was deemed to be playing Max Johnston on as he crossed for Kevin Van Veen's home opener, with James Tavernier and Fashion Sakala responding for Rangers. Bevis Mugabi then restored parity before controversy reigned.

Having scored the second, Sakala was called onside by VAR as he played a part in Cantwell's goal but 'Well boss Stuart Kettlewell wanted clarity on whether the lines were right. After Malik Tillman's winner, Callum Slattery got a second yellow to reduce the hosts to 10 men but there was conflicting opinions on whether or not the arm warranted a red. Rangers hero Neil McCann says the offside lines must be trusted: "You can see it is very tight (Van Veen's goal) but I think we have got to trust the lines and that the technology works.

"You give the benefit of the doubt to the forward. I know Stuart talking about it (the third goal) being skewed as well in comparison to the 18-yard box but I think it's the angle.

"When both goals happen, I think both look offside and. I think you need to trust the angle of the camera and it has picked up."

Fellow pundit and ex-Rangers man - plus current Motherwell coach - Richard Foster meanwhile could see why Kettlewell had an issue while Cantwell's reaction to Slattery was less than impressive: "Sakala's line is ahead of the Motherwell defender's so technically he is ahead of the Motherwell player by such a small margin he is still onside.

"That is where I think the manager has a bit of a grievance. The first one (yellow card) for Slattery he lunges in but the second one is an absolute embarrassment from Cantwell.

"His reaction is an embarrassment. Nick Walsh has every right to believe he's been hit hard in the face, but I don't believe Tyson Fury would knock him down as quick as that, he throws his hands to the face and throws his body to the face.

"Players need to take responsibility as if that is the other way around, everyone in the Rangers team complains. He does the referee and that takes my Motherwell bias out of this."
