Todd Boehly told key Chelsea signing would be 'biggest transfer of the last 50 years'

Asking a Chelsea supporter to name the Blues' best ever signing is a difficult task. Chelsea have made some outstanding additions who have played integral roles in the club's success, particularly during the Roman Abramovich era.

Frank Lampard, Gianfranco Zola and Didier Drogba would all be popular choices, but Chelsea have been told that they if they can get one particular deal over the line, it would be their biggest signing in the last 50 years. However, the person in question isn't Aurélien Tchouaméni, Rafael Leao, Frenkie de Jong or any other high-profile player linked with Chelsea.

Todd Boehly has been told that hiring Christoph Freund as the Blues' new sporting director would have been a 'sensational' signing.

Freund was heavily-linked with the vacancy at Stamford Bridge, but he has confirmed that he will be staying at RB Salzburg. It is understood that Boehly wants a data-driven approach to recruitment at Chelsea, and Freund - who was behind the signings of Erling Haaland and Sadio Mane - would have fitted the bill.

Former Salzburg boss Adi Hutter, who managed the Austrian club between 2014 and 2015, believes appointing Freund would have represented great business from Chelsea.

“The way he deals with people is great," said Hutter. "This would be the biggest transfer of the last 50 years and I think it’s sensational that he’s being traded at Chelsea.

"I wish it would be possible for him to take this step.”
