Todd Boehly facing Graham Potter regret as Chelsea struggle after Mauricio Pochettino U-turn

Chelsea took the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel back in September and elected to appoint Graham Potter ahead of Mauricio Pochettino.

Just two months into his reign at Stamford Bridge, Potter is already under huge pressure after the Blues have suffered four defeats in their last five matches in all competitions heading into the World Cup break. Chelsea were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Manchester City in the third round, a competition they finished runners-up in last term under Tuchel.

Injuries to Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell and Kepa Arrizabalaga have not helped Chelsea in recent weeks, but the team's performance in general has been well below par. After spending close to £300million in the summer transfer window, many signings have struggled to make a positive impact on the squad with Chelsea now sat eighth in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of the top four.

Just 16 months after guiding the Blues to Champions League glory, Tuchel found himself leaving Stamford Bridge just a day after managing his 100th game in charge of the Blues. There had been plenty of change throughout the summer under Boehly after the Clearlake consortium completed a £4billion takeover of Chelsea, replacing former owner Roman Abramovich following sanctions placed on the club by the UK Government.

Boehly had a big decision to make and quickly assembled a shortlist of top managers to replace Tuchel in west London. Potter was entrusted as his replacement, with the Blues prising him away from Brighton in the hope he’d be able to improve performances and fit in with the new long-term vision implemented by the new ownership at the club.

After a positive start which saw the Blues qualify for the Champions League round of 16, there are now doubts over Potter's ability to manage at the top level with Chelsea having suffered defeats against Brighton, Arsenal, Man City and Newcastle. Boehly will be concerned by the fact that the Blues have failed to win in their last six domestic outings and may be regretting his decision to pass up on approaching Pochettino over the vacant managerial position as he focused on moving for Potter instead.

As football.london previously reported back in September, the American owner had set his sights on the former PSG and Tottenham boss, who is currently a free agent. Pochettino was initially earmarked as Boehly's number one target to take over from Tuchel, and the Blues owner may be tempted to make another change in the dugout should results not improve after the World Cup.
