Todd Boehly can complete Chelsea plan with perfect Bundesliga recruit in unique transfer model

Despite overhauling the recruitment department since the summer, with influential figures Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech moving on, Chelsea might not be done yet. The club have only just finalised the structure of their new look team consisting of Christopher Vivell, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields and Paul Winstanley.

That group are now in charge of ensuring that the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital axis has more of a forward thinking plan and model than they ended up inheriting last year. The Blues have lacked such a pathway for years now and have fallen behind on the science of recruiting and aligning the club as a whole.

It's partially why there has been such a large level of turnover across the club in the 10 months since changing hands. The new team are in place now though and are well under way in terms of planning for the summer and years to come.

The upheaval may not be done just yet, though. During the search for a director of football-type figure - Vivell is the closest thing to this with the title of technical director - the Blues were keen on Bayer Leverkusen's Tim Steidten. The chance to go back in for the revered director has arisen again already.

The Bundesliga side have parted ways with the man behind deals for Piero Hincapie, Edmond Tapsoba, Jeremie Frimpong, Moussa Diaby and Florian Wirtz. His stance in the game is still at an all-time high though, with clubs looking for recruitment specialists capable of attracting the best young players in the world.

Steidten fits the bill for what would be expected at Stamford Bridge, too. The issue here is that with all the roles filled at the club there doesn't appear to be room for another new director, though teams often wouldn't appoint four in such a short space of time either.

In the statement announcing the structure of the team it was explained: "Chelsea has confirmed its sporting department with Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley taking up their roles as co-sporting directors. They oversee the entire sporting team, comprising talent, scouting, recruitment and data. Winstanley joined in November last year and oversaw Chelsea's January transfer strategy alongside the board.

"Stewart joins the club next week from AS Monaco, where he was technical director. They will work closely with Graham Potter and his coaching team to support the men's first team. The team includes technical director, Christopher Vivell, focusing on football globally, Joe Shields, Kyle Macaulay and Jim Fraser leading on talent management and recruitment, and Matthew Hallam leading on data and analysis.

"The team's focus will be on ensuring Chelsea is competitive and sustainable on the pitch, investing in the growth of the sporting department team to identify, nurture and develop talent over the long-term with a modern data-driven philosophy."

Had no such choice been made then Steidten may have been up there with the clear picks to come to SW6 but as it happens Liverpool and Juventus are two of the sides looking for answers to their own model. Meanwhile, Tottenham may also be in the market for a similar profile of director.

Whether further changes to that team are in order remains to be seen but what is for certain is that Steidten is now likely to be a man in demand and Chelsea have made little secret of being interested in those occupying similar spaces.
