The Premier League's next TV rights deals will be settled later this year as major players gear up for a go at entering the market.
Domestically, Sky TV, BT Sport and Amazon Prime have the rights for live coverage and highlights while the BBC can screen highlights only and a host of deals worldwide grant access to With the financial landscape in sport settling after a turbulent couple of years because of coronavirus lockdowns, more blockbuster deals could be secured when the Premier League's live rights go out to tender.
It has been reported that Apple TV, Netflix and DAZN could enter the market as streaming services bid to take on the established linear television broadcasting companies. A blueprint has, potentially, already been established for anyone wanting to crack the Premier League streaming market by Apple TV and their work with Major League Soccer.
MLS Season Pass is a product available worldwide by Apple TV for $14.99 a month in the United States of America and £14.99 a month in the UK. It's a subscription service that is built into the Apple TV app and will show every MLS game as well as cup matches and other content like analysis, behind-the-scenes shows and reserve games.
Chelsea and Arsenal, whose American owners Todd Boehly and Stan Kroenke will be watching with interest, could see something similar happen in the UK soon. It was reported last month that Apple TV are 'preparing' to make their move into the Premier League market and while it is unlikely they would replicate what has been done in the MLS with every game, a streaming service with some matches is a possibility.
The current rights deal between Sky Sports, BT Sport and the Premier League ends in 2025 and is currently valued at £5.1bn. The Daily Mail name-checked Boehly as being 'convinced' that the current deal undervalues the product.
Boehly, as owner of the LA Dodgers baseball team, struck a mega $8.5bn agreement with Time Warner in 2012 and was said to be keen to make more of the content the team could provide. In the USA, MLB teams can agree deals with local networks to air their games to a regional audience unlike in the Premier League.
Boehly was ahead of the game and could be on the scene for a revolutionary moment in Premier League broadcasting history. "We were a little early to thinking about this," Boehly said.
"I don't think the world saw it like we saw it at the time. Having a fixed-income credit structure background gave me a way to look at it from a different lens."
