Todd Boehly already preparing for new season as fresh Chelsea problem approaches fast

Todd Boehly's ability to own multiple sports clubs across the world and have success with each is set to be tested to new limits. The American businessman made Chelsea his second major sports investment last summer when he partnered with Clearlake Capital to purchase the then reigning world and European champions.

Since then he has hardly been out of the news. Taking on the mantle as an interim director of football, going on whirlwind tours of the continent in search of transfer targets, new contacts and directors to add to the Blues' portfolio, Boehly has been busy.

Between the consortium headed by Clearlake's money - with Behdad Eghbali the public facing figure from that - there is other interest and input from Hansjorg Wyss as well. It has seen over £600m spent on new players, a managerial change, complete reset of backroom and directoral staff as well as steps taken to solve the Stamford Bridge capacity issue.

Like the ownership change itself, things that would usually take years to work on have been done in fast-forward. Making it all work out on the field has been the tough part but one that is showing signs of taking off now.

For Boehly, owning a sports club is nothing new. He has been chairman and co-owner of Los Angeles Dodgers for over a decade now. Working with Guggenheim Partners, the MLB side have won the World Series under the new ownership, the first time in over 30 years, and have three National League pennants as well as being Western Division winners nine times.

In short, there has been success, and sustained and prolonged success. The mass and global interest in football creates a new question for Boehly though. He has been so active with Chelsea, and more is needed to be done, that it may well become tough to continue when paired with the restart of the MLB season.

Spring training is already underway with just over two weeks now until the Dodgers play their first game of a mammoth season that dwarfs the Premier League in terms of games. It requires attention, close control and Boehly is an active owner creating a potential conflict of interest and time. There is a boost here and something to work with though.

The season for baseball is largely throughout the summer for England where little-to-no league football is played. Although it is peak transfer season there is not a massive overlap with the two seasons, meaning Boehly should be able to spread himself across the two main franchises. He is also involved with LA Lakers as well.

MLB, for most teams, goes on from the start of April to the middle of September whereas the competitive football season is September to May. There is always work to be done throughout but in terms of when both sides will be playing their games, it isn't too much to handle on the outside of things.

At this current point there is nothing to suggest that the owners will not be able to handle the workload either but it is a point worth baring in mind as the new season in America starts to take shape whilst the Premier League draws to its conclusions. In the meantime Boehly will be hoping that Graham Potter can push his side up the table and also continue a run in the Champions League. There is little stress for the current squad, only if things were to go rapidly downhill would a serious decision regarding Potter need to be made.

There is also already a chance at this stage, and with the new directors in place, to be preparing for the new football season at Stamford Bridge behind the scenes. With attention on the future rather than immediate short-term there is a chance to get ahead of the game. Although Boehly likes to be hands on and involved, the aim is to get the qualified and best fitting people in the roles to ensure that his overall interference is limited. It's the self-serving model desired.

That is how the Dodgers are set up. Chelsea aren't yet at that stage but if they can get there the benefits of Boehly over a long period will start to become evident and he will be able to sit back and watch his two teams competing at the highest level with relative calmness.
