Today's rugby news as Wales told to pick Anscombe over Biggar and Ireland star's 's**t' jibe at All Black picked up by mic

Here are the latest rugby headlines on Sunday, July 10.

'Anscombe should start'

Former Wales flanker Emyr Lewis believes Gareth Anscombe should start the series decider against South Africa next weekend following his heroics in the historic victory on Saturday.

Dan Biggar, who was nursing a shoulder injury after the game, says he is "desperate" to be involved but Lewis is of the view that Wales head coach Wayne Pivac needs to make the most of his squad.

"Personally I think Gareth Anscombe should start the third Test at fly-half and Rhys Patchell should be on the bench," he told BBC Radio Cymru. "There's no point bringing them on tour if they don't play, but I'm not sure what Wayne Pivac will do."

He added: "Wales were always in the game. Did we deserve to win the game? No, but in those last five minutes things changed for Wales.

"There was more pressure on South Africa, they felt that pressure, and Wales were still in the game. Once Gareth Anscombe was on the pitch I think things changed for Wales, more things were happening and more questions were being asked of South Africa."

Pivac said of the replacement fly-half: "He is a quality kicker, I have confidence in him, he missed one but he got the one that mattered."

Warburton wants Wales continuity

Sam Warburton, however, wants as much consistency as possible in Wayne Pivac's final Wales selection of the summer.

"I'd like to see that," he told Sky Sports. "I think you've got to honour them [the players] again. You might be able to tinker with one or two and maybe on the bench, play around, try and give someone some game time but while the squad has got confidence this is the team you need to start nurturing towards the World Cup.

"Of course there's going to be opportunities down the line, there's another 10 Tests to experiment. But I think now you've got to go for the jugular, go for the series win."

Peter O'Mahony's Richie McCaw outburst

Ireland back-rower Peter O'Mahony appeared to have a few choice words for All Blacks captain Sam Cane during Ireland's series-saving 23-12 win over New Zealand on Saturday.

Blindside flanker O’Mahony was at the heart of it the victory, and also the face-to-face on-field sledging too. A few choice words for Cane were picked up by referee Jaco Peyper’s microphone, according to RugbyPass.

"Who do you think you are? You’re a s**t Richie McCaw pal,” O’Mahony is reported to have told the Chiefs veteran in one altercation.

McCaw has been a hard act to follow, with Cane facing criticism back home amid suggestion his place in the team should be under threat.

Rugby World Cup place up for grabs

Namibia take on Kenya in the Rugby Africa Cup final on Sunday knowing that a win would see them qualify for next year's Rugby World Cup in France.

Namibia made their World Cup debut in 1999 and are aiming for a seventh successive appearance at the final.

Namibia coach Allister Coetzee told BBC Sport Africa: "We are playing against a very physical Kenyan side - they're quite big, physical players. They have a fantastic scrum-half and the inside centre is also a dangerous ball carrier, but we have got to stick to what we do best.

"First and foremost, I want to make sure that the team is fresh, the team is well rested and recovered, and field the best possible team again. We are excited and we're looking forward to it."

The winners of Sunday's final will join hosts France, three-time champions New Zealand, Italy and Uruguay in Pool A next year.

Kenya will be hoping to reach the World Cup for the first time, but must overcome a side ranked 24th in the world, nine places above them.

Although the Rugby Africa Cup winners will be guaranteed a ticket to France 2023, Sunday's losers will have another chance to get to the tournament. The runners-up in Aix-en-Provence will progress to a four-nation intercontinental knock-out in November for the final qualifying place at the World Cup.

Wales contract talks ongoing for months

Talks between Wales Women head coach Ioan Cunningham and the Welsh Rugby Union about extending his contract have been ongoing for months, with the Welsh boss having now signed to remain in post for another three years up to and including the 2025 Rugby World Cup in England.

The former Scarlets forwards and Wales U20s coach told his players the news in a WhatsApp video on Tuesday evening - joking "no-one came in with any cards or chocolate or anything, so I know where I stand!" - while he also received a public endorsement from Walker.

"Those conversations were happening fairly regularly from the start, really," said Cunningham, who came on board on an initial interim basis last autumn. "He [Walker] was in my ear a lot!"

Of the players and staff, he said: "They’re fantastic people which made my decision very easy. I really, really enjoy working with this group. I'm just super excited about what we can do: the growth we’re going to have in the team, growing the depth of talent over the next few years, working closely with [Wales Women U20s and U18s lead] Liza Burgess... putting our starting team down for the first game of the 2025 World Cup, what’s it going to look like, and work back from that."

Asked whether he had turned down other offers to stay with Wales, he replied: "There are always options, but my heart is here and I’m delighted to stay on to work closely with this group. To represent your country, there’s no greater honour, whether you’re playing, coaching, backroom staff, you’re still representing Wales. You count yourself lucky."

Walker added: "I've been in his ear for a number of months and he gave in to me in the end! It was clear the impact Ioan has had on the programme, certainly through the autumn, since and during the Six Nations. He’s admired and respected by the players in equal measure, he’s built a team of coaches and support staff who buy into his vision and he’s put together a programme which has meant we won two games in the autumn when we hadn’t won a game for two years, we finished third in the Six Nations, so it was a very easy decision for me to get on his back for a number of weeks to ask him to put pen to paper."
