Carwyn Jones interviewed for WRU chair job
Former Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones has reportedly been interviewed to take up the role as chair of the Welsh Rugby Union.
Mr Jones, who served as First Minister from 2009 to 2018, is one of the people lined up to take on the role next, according to Nation.Cymru.
The report that one source said: “As the former First Minister, no one is better qualified for such a role than Carwyn Jones. He ran a country for nearly a decade and who can doubt that he is up to the task of running Welsh rugby?
“The WRU should move ahead and appoint him as soon as possible.”
The comes after a bombshell BBC investigation alleged sexism and discrimination within the WRU. Former Wales international Nigel Walker has since acted as interim CEO, with former Wales captain Ieuan Evans as chair.
The new chair is expected to be named by the end of the summer and will be tasked with appointing a new chief executive.
Cardiff eyeing player in Gatland's training squad
Cardiff are reportedly eyeing up signing Ospreys full-back Cai Evans this summer.
The 23-year-old, who is the son of Lions and Wales icon Ieuan, was recently named in Warren Gatland's World Cup training squad.
Evans, who played seven times for the Ospreys last season, also plays at outside half and could add to Cardiff's options at No.10, given Jarrod Evans and Rhys Priestland leaving the Arms Park this summer.
And The Rugby Paper report that the Welsh capital city club could move for the versatile former Wales under-20s player, who is out of contract at the Swansea.com Stadium this summer.
Gatland leaves Chiefs for Japan
Chiefs fly-half Bryn Gatland will join Japan’s Kobelco Kobe Steelers club next season.
The 28-year-old - who is the son of Wales coach Warren - joined the Chiefs in 2021 after making his debut for Waikato in 2015.
"Bryn has been an excellent Chief over the last three years,’’ Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan said. “He is an experienced and calm tactician, an outstanding goal kicker and a tough defender. These qualities will serve him well as he embarks on the next phase of his rugby journey."
"I am gutted for Bryn that injury prematurely ended his season and the potential for higher honours because he deserved it. We wish him well with his recovery and the opportunity in Japan.”
The fly-half said it was time to go, adding: "Goodbyes are never easy, but it’s time for me to move on to a new challenge and experience in my career.
"I’ve loved my time at the Gallagher Chiefs and want to thank everyone involved in helping fulfil the dream of a 10-year-old kid born and raised here.
“This team will always hold a special place in my heart and I will always continue to support from wherever I am."
Veteran Care to be named in England World Cup training group
Veteran Danny Care, 36, is set to be named in England's World Cup training squad today, according to The Telegraph.
Steve Borthwick will select a group of around 30 players and Care, who hasn't played for England since last year but has amassed 87 caps, is expected to be picked. Ben Spencer of Bath is another thought to be under consideration as a scrum-half option.
Another surprise pick, they report, is Zach Mercer. The back-row moved from Montpellier to Gloucester this summer and England are expected to bring him back into the fold at the first opportunity.
The 25-year-old last represented England in 2018 but fell out of favour under former boss Eddie Jones, leading to him moving to France in 2021.
