The expansion of University of Kentucky HealthCare through additional building projects is anticipated to be a multi-year process. Planning for what could be more than $2 billion dollars in new facilities is now underway. That includes new construction on the Chandler Medical Center campus in Lexington. Acting Co-Executive Vice President for Health Affairs Eric Monday said one need centers on bed space.
“We are going to begin design of a new bed tower that could be one tower, could be multiple towers. It’s undetermined at this point. We do know we need more capacity for Kentuckians, so we need more beds on the Chandler campus,” said Monday.
Monday noted a new medical pavilion with additional beds could still be four to six years away. But the UK vice president added four new ambulatory sites in and around Lexington will hopefully be up in months, not years.
The expansion plan, expected to play out over several years, also calls for some 48 hundred more employees. Monday said some of those new hires could come on board as soon as January with the opening of 64 beds on the 12th floor or Pavilion A.
