For the second time, First Lady Britainy Beshear is spearheading a Christmas toy drive following a natural disaster. Last year more than 100,000 toys were collected for kids in western Kentucky following the deadly tornadoes there.
In an interview with WEKU, the First Lady said this year, special attention needs to be paid to eastern Kentucky following the summer flooding that impacted thousands of families.
“You know, the timing is different than that of the tornado, which was right before Christmas. But it does not change the fact that over 7,500 kids have been affected by the flooding… and I’m not even sure flooding is the right word because of the devastation. It felt more like a tsunami when you saw the aftermath of it,” said Beshear.
Beshear said she hopes the toys will take a burden off of parents and caregivers who are still trying to get their lives and homes back on track after the historic flooding.
“Buying Christmas toys is probably not on the forefront of your mind. And so, to bring Christmas magic for the kids and to bring a moment of joy and hopefully some relief for the caregivers is really important to me,” said Beshear.
New, unwrapped toys should be sent to Jenny Wiley State Resort Park by December 14. More information can be found at here.
