The CIA’s most ridiculous Cold War spy weapon was a Xerox photocopier

A retro file stamped Top Secret with a camera on top under a spotlight.

In 1963, the CIA attempted an espionage operation so bizarre, it sounds like something out of a TV show.

See, the agency wanted to know what's really happening inside the Soviet Embassy in downtown Washington DC. So, they tasked a secret team of engineers to find a way to spy on every document passing through a notoriously unreliable Xerox photocopier. And the only one who could smuggle in the camera was the repairman. That's not a code-name, by the way. He was the embassy's regular repairman.
