TMO howler leaves viewers gobsmacked as huge error made awarding try

A TMO in New Zealand has made what some feel may be one of the worst calls of the year, as he awarded a hugely controversial score which has received huge backlash from TV viewers on social media.

The game was played on Wednesday night in the Bunnings NPC tournament in New Zealand, between Tasman and Wellington. After 28 minutes, Wellington's Connor Garden-Bachop seemingly scored an incredibly athletic try in the corner, fending off Tasman's All Black Sevu Reece.

Seemingly.

When playing the footage back, despite the awe-inspiring finish, it is painfully clear to see that the player's hand is touching the ground outside of play, despite his legs being completely off the ground. Nevertheless, the try was awarded by TMO Cory Eggers.

It begs the question - how on earth did he not see it? Take a look at the clip below.

The try was awarded on-field by referee Brendan Pickerill and it went up to TMO Eggers who looked at it three times before awarding it, according to New Zealand Herald ..

Despite the score being just 3-0 to Tasman at the time, Wellington would go on to win the game 25-19, which makes the controversy all that more worse, leaving viewers to take to social media to express their distaste.

The New Zealand Herald also reported that former All Black prop Kane Hames, who was commentating and later spoke to the TMO, said "The TMO is sitting right next to me and I did have a chat to him.

"He didn't actually look at the left hand, he missed it. He's just seen the replay again and he's gutted. So there's the explanation."
