Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Wednesday said he will look into a request by Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra’s lawyers to urgently list a petition filed in the Supreme Court against her expulsion from Lok Sabha.
Responding to an urgent oral mention, the Chief Justice told senior advocate A.M. Singhvi, appearing for Ms. Moitra, to send an email.
“Please send it. I will look at it right away,” the Chief Justice said.
Mr. Singhvi urged the Chief Justice for a listing in the next two days as the court was closing for vacations.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Singhvi made an oral mention before Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, the number two judge in the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice was presiding over a Constitution Bench.
Justice Kaul advised Mr. Singhvi to mention the case before the Chief Justice.
The Trinamool Congress leader was expelled from the Lok Sabha on December 8 over cash-for-query allegations. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi had moved a resolution which said her continuance as a Member of Parliament was “untenable” and her conduct was “unbecoming of an MP”.
The Trinamool MP was accused of taking bribes, including expensive gifts, from Dubai-based businessman Darshan Hiranandani in return for asking questions in Parliament.
Ms. Moitra was not allowed to speak on the floor of the House. She termed the expulsion as “hanging by a kangaroo court”.
