Week 1 of the NFL season starts on Thursday, and while every NFL team has its roster down to 53 men, the Tennessee Titans actually have room for more players after waiving veteran linebacker Luke Gifford on Tuesday.

Gifford joined the Titans in 2023, appearing in 11 games and earning six tackles (three solo). He struggled with injuries and spent most of his time on the field with special teams. Prior to joining the Titans, Gifford played four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2019.
Gifford’s absence makes room for the Titans to trade for another player, sign a free agent, or elevate someone from the practice squad. The Titans have less than 53 men signed for 2024, and with the amount of cap space they have, there’s wiggle room.
One of the spots the Titans will need to address is the defensive depth. The defense has three players on IR and was already slim. Taking a player from the linebacking corps didn’t exacerbate the problem, but the Titans need help on the edge. With two edge rushers on IR, especially on the weak side.
The Titans face the Chicago Bears on Sunday, so it will be interesting to see if they attempt to address this problem prior to the game.
