In the midst of a disastrous season, there are many fans out there calling for the Tennessee Titans to fire head coach Mike Vrabel, who certainly deserves some of the blame for the mess this team is right now.
When asked about his thoughts on his job security after the ugly 34-14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Vrabel said that isn’t something he thinks about.
“I don’t try to concern myself with that,” Vrabel said, per Paul Kuharsky. “I’ll let you guys fire me each week, or not fire me. I apologize; I appreciate your question, I do. I will always understand that. We have to improve and we have to win, those are things we have to do.”
After Tennessee’s 14th loss in its last 17 games dating back to 2022, running back Derrick Henry came to the defense of Vrabel.
“A lot of us on the team feel like we’re just not playing great as a team,” Henry said, per ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “All the self-inflicted wounds on drives and things that we know that we can be better at, executing and things like that. As far as coach being the head coach, I feel like he’s done a great job. I don’t know as far as the higher-up decision or anything else, if you’re trying to ask. But I feel like we built a culture here, established that culture, but right now we’re just not playing to that standard and it’s costing us.”
Saying Vrabel has “done a great job” after what we’ve seen over the last calendar year is being very nice, but we should expect nothing less from Henry, who would never throw his coach under the bus.
There is no question the Titans’ biggest issue is a lack talent on both sides of the ball. However, the coaching staff hasn’t had any answers for the problems that plague this team, which is obviously concerning.
While this is the closest I’ve ever been, I’m not on the fire Vrabel bandwagon just yet and believe he should get another shot in 2024, when the Titans will have ample opportunity to improve this roster with $100 million and a high draft pick at their disposal.
