The Tennessee Titans are freeing up some cap space by restructuring the contract of inside linebacker, Zach Cunningham, which also means he’s sticking around for 2022.
The exact specifics are not yet known, but ESPN’s Field Yates reports that the Titans will clear $6.456 million, which is huge considering how strapped for cash Tennessee is. Cunningham would have accounted for a $10.4 million cap hit without a restructure.
Cunningham was let go by the Houston Texans in 2021 and shockingly fell into Tennessee’s lap via waivers.
The 27-year-old was a beast for the Titans in five games (including playoffs), routinely finishing near the top of the team in tackles every game, and he was all over the place on the field, constantly making plays.
Looking ahead to 2022, Cunningham will form an impressive duo at inside linebacker with David Long, both of whom are athletic freaks that play with great instinct and fly all around the field. Backing them up will be 2021 fourth-round pick, Monty Rice.
From there, the Titans will likely add one more linebacker to fill out the depth chart, but they are rock solid with their top three.
Tennessee still has work to do to clear more cap space, something we expect them to do by restructuring other high-paid players, which could include Derrick Henry and Kevin Byard, to name a few.
