The Tennessee Titans are set to play the Carolina Panthers later today in a battle between two teams that have a combined record of 4-16. When it comes to the Titans, they’re an abysmal 3-14 over their last 17 contests dating back to last season.
Truth be told, there have been a handful of reasons for the team’s struggles as of late, including talent deficiencies, injuries and suspect coaching at times.
However, there are two specific areas that the Titans have simply been unable to overcome over the last two seasons.
According to My Inside Edge, Tennessee is winless since the start of 2022 when the opposing team rushes the ball at least 30 times (0-6) and when it’s trailing at the end of the third quarter (0-10).
Those two things go hand-in-hand. When the Titans are trailing at the end of the game, that often allows the opponent to run the ball more than they’re throwing.
The problem is, Tennessee’s once-potent run defense has become a shell of itself, and it’s unable to get off the field without allowing a chunk of time to be taken off the clock.
The Titans used to be a team that thrived when it came to fourth-quarter comebacks, but now, trailing in the fourth has become a death sentence for this squad.
We’ll have to wait and see if they’re able to end this streak sometime this season, but the way the Titans are trending, it wouldn’t surprise anybody if this streak extends all the way to 2024.
