'Tired and upset' passengers told to get off diverted plane as Cardiff Airport incident sees another flight cancelled

Passengers travelling to Cardiff have reportedly had to get off their flight after it was diverted to Bristol following an incident at Cardiff Airport on Sunday.

Travellers on the Wizz Air flight from Corfu to Cardiff earlier today saw their plane forced to divert to Bristol after an incident involving a light aircraft at Cardiff Airport at around 1.35pm today. The airport said its airfield was closed for nearly an hour after a light aircraft went off the end of the runway during landing.

It said no injuries were sustained and there was no damage to the aircraft. The Department for Transport and Air Accidents Investigation Branch were notified and the runway reopened at 2.30pm after the aircraft was moved to safety.

However the incident has had a knock on effect, with passengers on the Corfu flight reportedly left on-board on the runway at Bristol Airport for more than two hours after the flight was diverted. One passenger described the scene, claiming that passengers on-board were only offered a bottle of water and that people became "tired and upset."

They claimed passengers were then told the plane would not be continuing to Cardiff Airport at all after another passenger said they did not want to fly, and reported that police later arrived onto the plane. They claimed passengers were then told to disembark and wait in Bristol Airport for further information.

"We have been sat here since 2.30pm with minimal updates," they said before disembarking. "I've been on so many flights this year and this has to be the worst so far."

Another person on the flight claimed passengers were told they would be transported back to Cardiff by bus and had received little information on how to get luggage from the plane in the meantime.

Back in Cardiff, passengers have also reported that the Wizz Air flight to Larnaca, which had been due to use the diverted Corfu plane, had been cancelled three hours after its original 2.15pm departure time passed by. Both Cardiff Airport and Wizz Air have been contacted for comment.

A statement from Cardiff Airport on Sunday relating to the original incident said: "At 1.35pm today, July 3, a light aircraft had an incident on landing at Cardiff Airport. The aircraft went off the end of the runway, resulting in the airfield being closed for just under an hour.

"Both the pilot and aircraft are fine with no injuries sustained and the aircraft remaining intact. The Department for Transport & Air Accidents Investigation Branch were notified and permission was received for the aircraft to be moved to safety from the end of the runway, allowing the airport to re-open our runway at 2.30pm.

"Disruption has been limited to one Wizz Air flight diverting to Bristol and some minor delays to operations for the afternoon. We are expecting all other activities to return to normal as soon as possible."

Both Cardiff Airport and Wizz Air have been contacted regarding the ongoing disruption.
