Timothée Chalamet’s Old Vic play, 4000 Miles has been cancelled after two years of pushbacks.

The play was first due to run at The Old Vic from April 6 until May 23 2020 but was postponed because of the pandemic.

“Despite an enormous amount of effort from all involved, we have now sadly and reluctantly concluded that we are unable to reschedule the show at a time possible for everyone involved,” a joint statement sent to ticket holders, signed off by director Matthew Warchus, Eileen Atkins and Timothée Chalamet, said.

“It’s been a long journey to get to this point and despite two years of trying hard to make it work, it has proved impossible. It’s hard to believe that it’s almost two years to the day that we should have been stepping onto The Old Vic stage.”

4000 Miles is a dramatic comedy written by American playwright Amy Herzog. It ran Off-Broadway in 2011 and 2012 and was a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It tells the story of a new relationship between a grandmother and her grandson after he takes a bike trip from the West Coast to her New York apartment.

At The Old Vic, Atkins was set to play the 91-year-old Vera Joseph, with Chalamet as her grandson, 21-year-old Leo.

The statement also explained thatthe theatre faces the additional challenge of having lost most of its income for the duration of the pandemic. It asked ticket holders to donate the value of their order to the theatre, rather than asking for a refund.

Chalamet has recently starred in films like Dune, The French Dispatch and Don’t Look Up, further cementing his star status. With Dune: Part 2 confirmed to be in the making, and a new Willy Wonka film starring the actor also set for 2023 release, it’s easy to see how schedules may have not been easy to clear.

He is also set to reunite with his Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino for horror film Bones and All.
