Timo Werner's five-word transfer message is telling as Chelsea star makes Thomas Tuchel request

Timo Werner has admitted his Chelsea career is under consideration as he looks for regular first-team football ahead of this year's FIFA World Cup. The Germany international made just 15 starts in the Premier League last season in an underwhelming campaign for the Blues.

Werner has been linked with a move away from Chelsea this summer as he looks for first-team minutes. The arrival of Raheem Sterling earlier this month means there is now even more competition on the left-hand side of attack. football.london understands Chelsea would be willing to sell Werner should the right offer come in, but his wage demands could put off potential suitors.

The German forward joined Chelsea in 2020 from RB Leipzig in a deal worth almost £50million. However, the 26-year-old has failed to impress at Stamford Bridge since his switch from the Red Bull Arena – leaving big questions over his future in west London.

Werner scored Chelsea's first goal of their pre-season tour of the United States on Saturday evening as they beat Club America 2-1. The German is still likely to find himself as an understudy to Sterling next season, though, and issued a five-word verdict on his future, saying: "I could be happy everywhere".

In an interview via the Mirror, Werner said: "First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals. That's the fact. I could be happy everywhere.

"It is clear I want to play more, and I should play more to first be in good shape for the World Cup and, also, to have a chance to play at the World Cup. I think it doesn't change anything whether it is a winter World Cup or in the summer. I think if I play half of the season of the whole season, I should play."

With Romelu Lukaku leaving the club on a season-long loan deal recently, there was a school of thought that it could be Werner's time to step up. Sterling's introduction, however, perhaps means that Werner has fallen back down the pecking order.

"It's not different to last season," Werner added. "I think it was the same when Romelu came here that we have big, big competition up front.

"At a big club like Chelsea, you have that competition. In pre-season, you can show that you want to play and that you are a guy who wants to be in the starting eleven. That's what I try.

"We play different systems. Sometimes with two strikers, sometimes with one striker and sometimes with a back four."

Asked whether he was told why he received limited opportunities last season, the Chelsea attacker replied: "It's hard to say. I didn't ask, but I think, of course, the manager always has different ideas and different thoughts on what you need in different games. I think in many games, I was not in his thoughts, so I try to change that."
