Timo Werner launches thinly-veiled dig at Thomas Tuchel amid Chelsea transfer exit rumours

Chelsea forward Timo Werner has hinted that Thomas Tuchel’s tactics do not suit him as questions continue to revolve around his long-term future at Stamford Bridge. The German striker arrived at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2019/20 campaign but has never quite been able to hit the heights expected of him.

In 80 appearances for the Blues, he has scored on just 19 occasions - only seven of those coming in the Premier League. That return is certainly not what the Blues required, especially after forking out £50m for his services from RB Leipzig.

Werner’s inconsistent form has seen rumours emerge that he could be set to leave Chelsea sooner rather than later, with the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Juventus emerging as potential destinations for the 26-year-old. Now, after finding the net for Germany in their friendly win over Israel, the striker has suggested that the tactical set-up on the international stage caters to his needs more than at Stamford Bridge under current boss Tuchel.

Speaking after the final whistle, he said: “I'm a striker and always want to score. Things aren't going the way I'd like at Chelsea, so it's all the better that things are going well here under Hansi Flick.

“I really enjoy playing football, no matter where I'm playing. There are differences in the style of play between football at Chelsea and here.

“Maybe the one at the national team suits me better. Here, I always have scoring chances, I can score goals. I feel very comfortable here.”

Werner remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2025 but his first-team opportunities appear to be decreasing with the Blues. Chelsea elected to secure the club-record signing of Romelu Lukaku in the summer, whilst Kai Havertz has regularly been preferred for a central attacking role.

As a result, Werner has been limited to just 15 starts in all competitions this season - only eight of those coming in league play. He has been limited to the sidelines for large parts of the campaign, however, due to injuries and Covid issues.
