Timmy the lost whale is finally on his way home after several rescue attempts

  • Timmy the humpback whale has commenced a critical journey towards the North Sea aboard a barge, after months of being stranded in shallow German waters.
  • The operation aims to return the mammal to its natural Atlantic Ocean habitat, following repeated strandings and deteriorating health since its first sighting on 3 March near Germany's Baltic Sea coast.
  • Teams spent hours carefully pulling the whale onto a flooded barge using straps and a dredged channel in the latest rescue attempt.
  • The barge reached Fehmarn island in northern Germany early Wednesday and will travel around Denmark's northern tip, via the Skagerrak strait, towards the North Sea.
  • The rescue effort has sparked debate among the scientific community, with some experts warning of severe stress to the whale and questioning the intervention, while others support the attempt to save it.
