Surely the rehabilitation of George Osborne must be almost complete. Regarding the ongoing Covid inquiry, the former chancellor says: “I think we’re going to get some … frankly shocking WhatsApp messages being published” (Dominic Cummings’ ‘misogynistic’ messages seen by Covid inquiry, George Osborne says, 27 October). This from the chap who once opined that he wouldn’t rest until Theresa May was “chopped up in bags in my freezer”.

• Your article on Historic England’s recognition of the value of the “ghost signs” all around us omitted the previous work done on these intriguing mementoes. The History of Advertising Trust archive contains hundreds of examples already recorded, and the Ghostsigns website has extensive research on their social history. Historic England should link up as well as look up.

• I understand Wendy Barnaby’s decision not to march over Israel and Gaza because of the partisan nature of demonstrations (Letters, 24 October). We must call out these polarisations, otherwise the killings will continue. I am preparing a banner for the next march that will read: “Stop hate”. A drop in the ocean maybe, but it will make the tiniest ripple.

• Your album review (Billy Bragg: The Roaring Forty review – four decades of flying the flag, 26 October) does a fine song a disservice by dismissing There Is Power in a Union as “rabble-rousing”. If it is, I am proud to be part of the rabble who are regularly roused by it.
