Prosecutors are considering whether to bring charges against ex-BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood after police handed over a file of evidence into non-recent sexual abuse allegations.

The Metropolitan Police has been investigating accusations of offences alleged to have happened between 1982 and 2016.

The offences are alleged to have happened when the 66-year-old was at the height of his career as a leading hip hop DJ.

The former BBC Radio 1 DJ, who stepped down from his show on Capital Xtra in 2022, has previously “strongly” denied any wrongdoing.

The Met has confirmed evidence has been handed to the Crown Prosecution Service, which will now decide whether to bring charges against the DJ.

Det Supt Andy Furphy, whose team is leading the investigation, said: “A file of evidence has now been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and our team continues to make enquiries, with support from prosecutors. We will thoroughly and properly investigate sexual offences as part of our commitment to making London safer for women and girls.”

A CPS spokesperson said: “We can confirm we received a file from the Metropolitan Police Service regarding allegations of non-recent sexual offences allegedly committed by a man in his 60s.”

In a statement, the Met Police said “a man in his 60’s has been interviewed under caution on four separate occasions. The offences are alleged to have occurred in London between 1982 and 2016”.

Westwood began his career on local radio before joining Capital Radio in London.

He then joined the BBC and left Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra in 2013 after nearly 20 years.

Westwood hosted a regular Saturday show on Capital Xtra, where he was referred to as “The Big Dawg” before leaving the company in 202 after the allegations emerged.

In August 2022, a review was commissioned by the BBC to examine the employment of Mr Westwood with the broadcaster after six historic complaints of bullying or sexual misconduct against the DJ.

It was initially believed the review would take around six months but a report is yet to be published amid the police investigation.

A statement from a representative of Westwood, released in 2022, said: “Tim Westwood strongly denies all allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

“In a career that has spanned 40 years, there have never been any complaints made against him officially or unofficially.

“Tim Westwood strongly rejects all allegations of wrongdoing.”

Efforts have been made to contact Westwood for further comment.
