NEW DELHI: New Zealand's Tim Southee will be absent from the World Cup's opening match against defending champions England and potentially several subsequent matches due to a thumb injury, as revealed by stand-in captain Tom Latham on Wednesday. The Black Caps will also be without their regular captain, Kane Williamson, who is recovering from a knee injury, when they take the field in Ahmedabad, home to the world's largest cricket stadium, on Thursday.
While Williamson participated in the team's first warm-up game as a batsman and fielded in the second warm-up, Southee has yet to make his debut in India.
