Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood is adamant that Newcastle United should've been awarded a penalty in their 1-0 win over Leeds United.
This was after Allan Saint-Maximin was brought down by Robin Koch during the second-half at Elland Road, however, referee Chris Kavanagh chose against awarding a spot-kick.
The decision was also checked by VAR and Kevin Friend, who decided to stick with the on-field officials and the game continued.
It didn't matter in the context of the result, though, as the Magpies held out for a priceless victory which takes them to within a point of 17th-place Norwich City at the bottom of the division.
But Sherwood believes that Kavanagh and VAR got it wrong and admitted the Magpies should've been given a chance to double their lead in the latter stages.
He told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday: "I think [Newcastle] should have had a penalty.
"Saint-Maximin goes in, he’s one-v-one, he’s attacking, he decides to cut back onto his right foot, the defender (Koch) misses the ball and hits his foot. He just drags it and makes contact in the penalty area.
"For me, that’s a penalty. Chris Kavanagh doesn’t give the penalty. Obviously, VAR looked at it and check complete, no penalty in their opinion.
"If he would have given it on-field, they certainly wouldn’t have overturned it."
Jeff Stelling was also bemused at the decision and feels that there was enough contact on Saint-Maximin for a penalty to be awarded.
He said: "We could all see it was a penalty. We could all see there was contact.
"Goodness knows what the VAR was looking at there, it’s Kevin Friend."
One fan tweeted when the 24-year-old put a post-match message on social media: "Definitely a pen Allan!"
Saint-Maximin replied: "I know".
Newcastle will be looking to make it back-to-back wins when they host Everton in what seems like a pivotal clash in the relegation battle after the upcoming winter break.
