TikTok star forced to explain Scouse custom ahead of Eurovision final

A TikTok star posted online to explain a very particular Scouse custom to his 1.5m followers.

New York hairstylist Matthew Newman, also known as Mattloveshair, is currently in the city for Eurovision and told people about the process of the famous 'curly blow'. Ladies in Liverpool love to look glamorous, and their desire to be on-trend with their hair has fuelled a thriving hairdressing industry in the city.

The classic curly blow has been in and out of favour over the last few years after it made a huge comeback following the years of people ironing their hair straight in the 00s. But if you are visiting the city this weekend and you are unsure what a curly blow is, Matt's video could help.

Filming in various locations across the city, he said: "It's called a curly blow, and all the Liverpool girlies are doing it. It's a round brush blowout with pin curls.

"What makes it a curly blow is leaving the beauty shop with your pin curls and going around town doing all your errands."

Followers in the comments love the video, one, Fran said: "I live in Liverpool and my mum was SHOCKED the first time she visited on a Saturday and saw all the girls in their rollers ahahha." Ells added: "Not a true Scouser unless you have had a curly blow."

Although Olivia De said: "As a girl from Liverpool I've barely ever seen anyone walking round like this."

Back in 2017, a huge debate was started when a city hairdresser said the curly blow was 'tacky' and claimed it was over. Andrea Daley, creative director at the Barbara Daley salon in the city centre, said at the time: “I think people have moved away from that, and they come to us because they don’t want that.

“I think the WAG trend, especially during the 2006 World Cup, you had Coleen, Posh Spice, Alex Gerrard , and they all had that blow dry, but they’re not in the public eye as much now. I look at my hair ten years ago and I’d be horrified if anyone blew it like that now.”

But there was a backlash from people who still loved the beautiful soft curls and volume the blowout give your hair. Chris Johnson-White, former Desperate Scousewives star and owner of a city centre salon, said to call the curly blow ‘tacky’ was unfair.

He said: "A good blow dry and getting that to last a week is a skill, it’s an art,” he said.

“I work in the USA a couple of times a year and when I do a curly blow dry over there they go crazy for it. But in Liverpool, we have people travelling all the way from Nottingham of a Saturday morning, getting a blow dry and then going back.

“We have a huge amount of hen parties from all over the UK and Ireland and they all want a curly blow dry.”
