During the short hearing held by Judge Timothy Spencer QC., the three female defendants were not required to enter any pleas in relation to the charges.

They appeared together by video-link from HMP Peterborough and spoke only to confirm their names and that they understood the seriousness of the charge. They have been remanded in custody by the judge until a plea hearing on March 18.

Addressing the three defendants, Judge Spencer said: “You face the most serious charge known to criminal law… do you know that?”

After the trio all said 'yes', the judge continued: “You will be brought to Leicester for a hearing on March 18 and your trial will be on September 26 or around that time. Thank-you for your attendance.”

The mother and daughter have remained in custody ever since the crash on the A46 in Leicestershire which killed two men. It involved a silver Skoda Fabia, a grey Audi TT and a blue Seat Leon, and Leicestershire Police believe they were all travelling at speed.

The crash victims have been named as Mohamed Hashim Ijazuddin and Saqib Hussain, from Oxfordshire.

The collision happened at 1.30am on Friday, February 11. The two men were in the silver Skoda Fabia which left the carriageway. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 21-year-old Stoke-on-Trent man - who was originally arrested on suspicion of murder - has since been released without charge.
