Tiger Woods rolls back the years with son Charlie to close in on PNC Championship title

Tiger Woods and 13-year-old son Charlie fired their way into contention at the PNC Championship in Orlando with a stunning round of 59.

Team Woods finished tied-second for the day on 13 under par, exploding into life after a slow start to head into Sunday just one shot off Team Thomas, compromising of US star Justin and his dad Mike. Team Singh are also in second, with Team Langer third - a shot back from Tiger and Charlie.

But it was Team Woods' showing that left fans impressed with both stars, with the 15-time major champion showing no ill-effects of the serious leg injuries that hampered his comeback last year. And despite appearing in discomfort, the maturity of Charlie was also evident, especially on the greens where he putted with an all-too familiar solidity.

The father and son duo played the first three holes in just one under par, but then came the kind of charge with signified the past dominance of Woods Snr at major championships. The pair played the next eight holes in nine under par, firing their way into contention.

Another birdie followed on 13 before the two dramatically saved par, Tiger with the exquisite chip out of the bushes and Charlie making no mistake with the putt. It was the youngster who also held his nerve on 16 when left with a four footer to save par.

Tiger found water on 17 but again, the two were able to come away with par. And then on 18, it was another throwback to yesteryear for the all-time great, playing a long iron to 25 feet, and although both eagle putts rolled by - the subsequent birdie left Team Woods 13 under par.

The chemistry between the pair was all too apparent with multiple fist bumps on the way around, and afterwards, fans were quick to laud both stars: "This type of performance was needed for Tiger Woods to provide hope that he can still play at the highest level," tweeted @TWlegion. "There have not been a ton of great moments since Augusta, and fair weather fans were starving to see something good."

"We are about to get a decade of Charlie Woods dominance, aren't we? I'm here for it," wrote @RScottWilson, while @Z_Swan547 joked: "Me watching Charlie Woods be better at golf than I will ever be...at 13 years old."
