Tiger Woods confirms he will play at Hero World Challenge in first event since Open Championship

Tiger Woods will make his return to competitive golf next month when he tees it up at the Hero World Challenge.

The American has not played since missing the cut at the 150th Open in the summer, with his nine competitive rounds in 2022 all coming at the majors.

He was last seen getting a huge reception walking down the 18th fairway at St Andrews, as an emotional Woods admitted afterwards that it could be his last Open round at his favourite golf course in the world.

As he has made it clear he will never have a full PGA Tour schedule again, it was up in the air whether he would play again this year, but the 46-year-old has now confirmed he will be competing at the Hero World Challenge, an event his foundation runs.

The 20-man exhibition event gets underway on December 1 at the Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas.

“I am excited to announce that I will be in the field for this year’s #HeroWorldChallenge,” Woods posted on Twitter.

The 15-time major champion also confirmed that the final two spots in the field would be filled by Tommy Fleetwood and Kevin Kisner. Will Zalatoris has been forced to pull out of the event, as he continues his recovery from the back injury that kept him out of the Tour Championship, with Shane Lowry replacing him.

It will be the first time since 2019, when he finished fourth, that Woods has competed at the tournament. Viktor Hovland won it last year, beating Scottie Scheffler by a shot.

Woods will also be in action a week later, when he takes part in the latest edition of The Match alongside Rory McIlroy on December 10. The two are teaming up against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in a 12-hole event to raise money for Hurricane Ian relief efforts.

Full field for Hero World Challenge:

Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Sam Burns, Jordan Spieth, Tom Kim, Tony Finau, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Cameron Young, Hideki Matusyama, Sungjae Im, Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Kevin Kisner.
