Ticketmaster offers partial refunds to The Cure fans over fees controversy

Ticketmaster has offered a partial refund to fans of The Cure after a controversy over high booking fees for the band’s upcoming US tour.

The company had been criticised by fans for high fees on its tickets, which in some cases had exceeded the actual cost of the show.

Frontman Robert Smith had said he was “sickened” by the costs and had pledged to get answers for fans.

On Thursday night, the singer announced that Ticketmaster had agreed the fees were “unduly high” and had agreed to return some of the money.

The “gesture of goodwill” means that the company will refund $10 (£8) to anyone who bought the lowest-price tickets, which were priced at $20 (£16), he said.

Everyone else who bought a ticket will receive a $5 refund.

“If you already bought a ticket, you will get an automatic refund," Smith said. “All tickets on sale tomorrow will incur lower fees.”

The iconic alternative rock band are due to embark on their Shows of a Lost World North American tour in May.

The 30-date tour will start from New Orleans.

Fans had complained of high fees when booking tickets this week, with one customer who bought four $20 tickets being required to pay $172 after fees.

Another customer paid $72.25 (£59.75) for a ticket with the face value of $20.

Smith had slammed the high fees, saying: “To be very clear, the artist has no way to limit them," he wrote.

“I have been asking how they are justified. If I get anything coherent by way of an answer, I will let you know.”

The Standard has contacted Ticketmaster for comment.
