Highland locals' shock as gun rampage leaves one dead and three injured
Local communities in Skye and Wester Ross have told of their shock following a gun rampage which left one man dead and three other people in hospital.
Police Scotland officers rushed to Tarskavaig, Skye, around 9am on Wednesday to reports of a 32-year-old woman being seriously injured.
The woman has been named locally as Rowena MacDonald, who is understood to have been stabbed. She was seriously inured and has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment.
A short while later, officers were called to a nearby property in the Teangue area after a report of a firearm being discharged at around 9.30am.
Emergency services raced to the scene but sadly a 47-year-old man was pronounced dead at the property. Police later named him as Scots dad John MacKinnon.
Officers subsequently attended at a property in the Dornie area in Wester Ross following further reports of a firearm discharged.
Disabled HMRC worker awarded £20k after bosses refuse to let him apply for job
A disabled HMRC worker has been awarded £20,000 after he was refused the chance to apply for a promotion on the basis he couldn't drive.
An employment tribunal has ruled that Hamish Drummond, from Dundee, should have been allowed to apply for one of ten senior tax investigator jobs being offered by the public body in 2020. Hamish, a tax office employee for 20 years, was encouraged to go for the role, a more senior version of his existing job, only to be knocked back before he could finish the application process.
The 42-year-old suffers from sudden onsets of dizziness and fainting, which in the past have led to him passing out and knocking his head. Doctors have been unable to identify a cause for his symptoms, but he was ordered to surrender his driving licence to the DVLA in May 2018 on medical grounds.
HR bosses said a licence was essential for the job, despite Hamish performing "very well" in his existing role without one. When he asked to be considered on his other merits, HMRC regional boss Paul Curry told him he wasn't "substantially disadvantaged" by his fainting disorder and would not be put forward for the position.

A Scots teacher who kissed and danced in a flirtatious manner with a pupil at a nightclub has been allowed to return back to teaching.
Ashley McConnell was issued with a reprimand by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) on Wednesday after investigators found her fitness to teach was impaired.
The physics teacher had been fighting for weeks to keep her job after an investigation was launched into her behaviour with a teen at Skinandi's nightclub in Thurso, Caithness, in March 2018.
The married Miss was found to have kissed a 17-year-old Thurso High School pupil at the nightclub, as well as danced with him in a flirtatious manner.
She also held hands with the teen and told other pupils who were at the same club to "f**k off" after they questioned her inappropriate behaviour.
Plane makes 'lowest ever landing' at island airport in heart-stopping video
Bystanders were left with their hearts in their throats as they watched a huge passenger plane make an incredibly low landing - coming in just a few metres above their heads.
Tourists had gathered to watch the Airbus A321neo as it made its descent into the Greek island of Skiathos, the Mirror report s. A video captured at the scene shows the jet approaching the popular holiday destination as boats bob on the calm waters of Mediterranean just below.
However, as the Wizz Air plane gets closer, it becomes clear that the pilot plans to touchdown just moments after clearing the perimeter fence of Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport.
As it soars over aviation enthusiasts standing on the shore, their gasps are drowned out by the passenger jet's roaring engines just a few metres above them.
Dying mum left with £55,000 bill after flying to Turkey for dental care
A mum-of-two who travelled to Turkey for a dental check-up only to discover she had a brain tumour has been given a devastating diagnosis. Lisa Robinson, 44, went alone to Antalya on the Southern coast last month for what she thought would be a routine cosmetic procedure consultation.
While there, she lost her balance and began acting like she was “drunk” - and her dentist called for urgent medical help before she was rushed to hospital. An emergency 13-hour operation followed as doctors found she had a lethal brain tumour.
Now she has been told the shattering news that she has “incurable” cancer, according to Mirror Online. Since returned to the UK, Lisa discovered that she had Stage 4 cancer.
She confirmed it is “incurable but treatable” as she begins her first round of radiotherapy to prolong her life. “My cancer will never go away,” Lisa, from Consett, County Durham, said.
