Thunderstorms to hammer Dublin as Storm Alex barrels towards Ireland

Bring out those brollies as Dublin is set to be lashed with showers and gusty winds over the coming days.

Weather Alerts Ireland has issued a thunderstorm warning for the country with Dublin being at the highest risk.

They added: "It will also be quite windy."

Meanwhile, the remnants of Tropical Storm Alex are expected to hit Ireland on Friday bringing with them strong winds.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said: "Latest track for the storm on Friday keeps the centre of it well out West on most models but a large wind field still brings some potential for strong gusts into West of Ireland and a usually windy June day for all."

Today will start off breezy with showers and longer spells of rain with afternoon temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees.

Tonight will be mostly dry with clear spells and temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees.

Tomorrow will be a miserable day with rain and drizzle expected all day but the evening will see sunny spells emerging. It'll be a hot day with the mercury jumping to as high as 21 degrees.

While there is no further forecast for Dublin, here is what Met Eireann's national outlook says:

Thursday night

A forecaster said: "Generally dry on Thursday night with isolated showers, mainly in the south and west. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in mainly moderate southerly winds, fresh to strong at times along Atlantic coasts.

Friday

"A breezy day on Friday with sunny spells and widespread showers. A few heavy downpours are possible. Afternoon temperatures from 16 to 19 degrees in a fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly breeze.

Friday night

"On Friday night, there will be some showers in the north and northwest, most other areas will be dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees in fresh southwest winds.

Saturday

"A bright and breezy day is expected on Saturday with long sunny spells and isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees in a fresh southwesterly breeze. Mainly dry overnight with clear spells and lowest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees."
