Thunderstorms loom as heatwave sweeps Scotland

SOARING temperatures have hit Scotland this week with sunshine across the country.

Forecasters have predicted heatwave conditions in parts of the UK this week, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 25C in Glasgow on Wednesday and 26C in Edinburgh on Thursday.

However, things are eventually set to cool down with the Met Office weather maps showing a bout of low pressure starting to migrate over Scotland on Saturday from 10am.

This could potentially result in rain and possible thunderstorms.

Temperatures will drop slightly with the north seeing lows of 15C, while Glasgow will see highs of 17C.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: “A cold front will begin to influence things from the northwest ahead of the weekend, bringing temperatures down and an increasing chance of rain for those in the west of Scotland.

“There’s still a large degree of uncertainty on the exact timing of this front, and there’s a chance that those further south in the UK could keep some higher than average temperatures through much of the weekend, perhaps even into the start of next week, though even this will be a step down from the peak that we’ll see in mid-week.”

Elsewhere, the Met Office’s Steven Keates said: “A cold front will begin to influence things from the northwest towards the weekend, though it’ll remain very warm or hot in the south.

“There’s a chance the thunderstorm risk to western areas from Friday onwards may require a warning response, with some potentially impactful downpours, though exact details on the likely positioning of these are still to be determined.”

Maps for Saturday show a cluster of rain concentrated over Argyll and in the Highlands. As the day goes on, this will move towards the north east, with light showers and sunshine predicted for Glasgow and Stirling later that evening.

Further northwards, more cloudy rainfall is set to reach as far as Ullapool.
